Troopers were called at around 3 p.m. on April 22 to a stretch of Crain Highway near Acton Lane in Waldorf to investigate a two-vehicle crash that left one dead and required one to be airlifted to the hospital.

Investigators say that a GMC Envoy driven by Waldorf resident Stacy Jermain Barksdale, 38, on US Route 301 was approaching Acton Lane in the right turn only lane.

At the same time, a Ford Expedition being driven by Denise Kesterson, 55, and occupied by Gary Cooper, 61, was making a left turn from Route 301, when the GMC failed to stop at a red light, and struck the Ford.

Barksdale failed to stop at the red light and struck the other truck.

Cooper was pronounced dead at the scene, and Kesterson was airlifted to the University of Maryland Capital Region Hospital. Both are from Fort Washington. Barksdale was taken by paramedics to the hospital for treatment and evaluation of undisclosed injuries.

According to state police investigators, speeding and impairment may have been factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.
